Spam Comments Bugging You?

I've been receiving a ton of spam comments on my blog lately.  Ugh!

And, I don't know about you, but I hate the robot checker and didn't really want to have to revert back to that (but knew I would have to if I couldn't find an answer...because some of the spam was just plain inappropriate!).

I think I found a temporary solution.  Maybe a permanent fix....time will only tell.

Here's what I did:

What I had begun to notice is that most of my spam comments were on older posts. So, this way, I can still receive comments (even from "Anonymous" comments) and I'm blocking most of the spam from getting through. I now receive notices that I have comments to moderate.  Well, guess what?  All of the ones that I have to moderate are about 99.9% spam.  And, most of the legit comments are still able to make it through without having to enlist ol' robot checker.

For me, it seems to be working...I'd better go knock on some wood.

Hope this helps you :)  If you have a better solution, I'd love to hear it!  Please comment below and tell me your tricks for comment moderation and blocking spam.

Happy Thursday :)

  1. I just took your advice! My spam was so bad, I changed to moderation. I'm not fond of that, so, I'm trying this now. My fingers are crossed! Good luck to you, too!

  4. Hi Elizabeth, I've only been blogging for a few weeks now so this might sound dumb! I have my comment moderation on "always" & my robo-checker off. Why do you have your setting on "sometimes" instead of "always"? Like I said, I'm really new to blogworld so I want to learn as much as I can!! Thanks for your help!!

    1. If you set it to "always" then you have to moderate it (approve it) in order for it to show up on your blog. Some people prefer that, but for me, I like my readers to be able to "see" their comment as soon as it is posted instead of waiting for me to approve it (because, let's face it...sometimes that might take a few days). When it is set to sometimes and I've set the date to 14 days then I only moderate comments that are posted on my older posts up to 14 days old. These are the ones that tend to get the most "spam" anyways. I hope that answers your questions. If not, please email me and I'll try to help you some more ;)

  5. Ooh- I love this tip! I knew how to turn moderation ON, but not what it meant to have it on sometimes. This makes so much sense to have it only check the ones from old posts! Thanks!

  6. aw ya, this is awesome! I had no idea! I don't allow the anonymous comments anymore but that does lead to spam. I haven't had the horrible amounts I've heard about from our friends (knock on wood!) but I'm doing this anyways. Thanks Elizabeth!!

    1. I was thinking of not allowing "anonymous", but thought I'd give this a try first to see if that helps. Then, plan B is no more anonymous...and plan C is back to robot-man. (Which I hope I don't have to do).

    1. Yes, this tends to be where my spam shows up, too. I'm hoping this works.

  8. That is a great idea, Elizabeth! I just turned the robot on this weekend because I couldn't take the spam anymore! I will try your technique, instead! :)

  9. I was getting a ton of spam too! I changed my settings to not allow "Anonymous", but then I felt like I was limiting comments for some users. This might be the perfect solution! Thanks :)
