Music in Math

Over the last few years, I've been incorporating music during my math class.  Just this week, we started our measurement unit and I was reminded of why I continue to use music to teach math.

Why?

Think about it this way...have you ever gotten a song so stuck in your head that I wish you hadn't heard that particular song on the way to school in the morning?  I know that I have.  Usually it is one that drives me a little crazy throughout the day.  And the more I think about it, the harder that song is to shake from my brain.

Why?

Jingles anyone?  Yes, advertisers know that the power of music will sell products.  A lot.

And the power of music will help concepts stick.

This week, we started customary capacity.

Last year, I found this song on YouTube.  And it sticks.

This is from the YouTube channel: TheMathPartyProgram.  I love the name :)

Because math should be a party.

And in my room, some days...it is :)

How do you incorporate music into your day?

  1. I use music during writing time and independent work....it's nice, and it especially lessens the talking when they work.

  2. Such a fun way to get math in! My kiddos like the "Volume Song" from Have Fun Teaching. Always makes them smile :)

  5. Sorry...didn't read the last comment before posting! I LOVE singing songs with my kiddos! Especially when it helps them remember content! We sing a ton of science and SS songs! Love having another math song to add to the mix!

  6. ooo I like that one a lot!! We use the karaoke from Study Jams for science and math sometimes. I love to play quiet music during Writer's Workshop (not the same thing as what you're saying, but you know what I mean!). We use Pandora and my students' favorite station is the movie scores :) I hope you're off to a nice weekend my friend!
